here we have an expression to make our conversation and speaking more like to a native english person

Hit the books means I have to study 
Imagine your friends is instisting you to watch a soccer game tonight with them and you have huge exam next week.
you can say:
sorry I can't watch the game with you tonight, I have to hit the books. I have a huge exam next week.
